HPSPE is a private school located in 537 Corner San Martin, San Matias Sto. Domingo in Angeles City Pampanga. It was all started in the year 2008. This school offers academic programs for pre-school, elementary, and special education. I've been observing this school for almost four semesters and I can say that I am already familiar with their educational system.

The classes in pre-school are divided into a small and big group. In the regular classes, the children with special needs are also included. Six years in elementary but now since our educational curriculum has been changed into K-12, they also started to offer junior high school including grade 7 and 8. This school is really focusing on the students with special needs, most of the students were diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and down syndrome but there are also students who are included in the regular classes because they have problems in terms of their behavior.

HPSPE are so much aware in terms of the safety and confidentiality of their students, every classroom have CCTV to monitor the teachers on how they deal with the students and if they are really teaching well, and that's good because this school really want to produce students who are knowledgable, have the ability to stand on their own feet and be functional in the society.

Discipline and Procedure

The Effective Teacher by Harry K. Wong:
Discipline and Procedure

Disciplining children is one of the most important yet difficult responsibilities not only for parents but for teachers as well. Children are really hard to teach, we need to remind them always until they learn to do it regularly. Effective and positive discipline is about teaching and guiding children, not just forcing them to obey. To be an effective in terms of disciplining our students we should know how to apply it first to ourselves if we don't know what's right from wrong the tendency is that we won't able to encourage our students to do good things.

We can teach discipline in different ways. Some teachers are using rewards to motivate students others are punishment. Using rewards such as candies, toys, stars, homework-free weekend etc. also a good idea because you will expect that your students will follow you, but the disadvantage of giving rewards is that children will put in their minds that "I will not obey my teacher unless she will give me something as an exchange" they will expect that there's a reward every you teach them discipline.

Some teachers also used punishment, and based on my observation and experience I can say that it is effective. Students will not disobey whatever rules that you have set inside the classroom because they know they will be punished if they violated those rules.
As a teacher in the near future, I will not only focus on the academic areas of the child but rather I will focus more on the attitude and behavior. A teacher is effective when she knows how to manage the class not just simply disciplining the children.

Why do we need to have an Orientation?

ORIENTATION

I was assigned to observe in HSPE, but before they allow us to observe in their school they gave us a quick orientation on the rules and regulations that we should follow but first why we should have an orientation before we proceed in observing? It is because through orientation we can determine the do's and dont's inside the school. The first thing that they raised to us is the taking of pictures of their students, the school strictly didn't allow us to take pictures because of confidentiality.

Our task is not only to sit in the corner and observe but also we should help the teacher in preparing for the lesson or activity like cutting or assisting the child in doing his activity. Another, we can't also hold or use the phone during the actual observation, we should concentrate on our goal, and that is to gain knowledge like strategies, techniques, and method used by the teacher. We can also acquire knowledge form the students because through observing them we can notice how they behave in the class. Those that I have mentioned, they will help us in understanding teaching, we can apply it in the near future when we are already in the field of teaching.

What we should do on the first day of school?

The Effective Teacher by Harry K. Wong:
Classroom Management

I had a lot of important things that I should remember as a future teacher and it will really help me in becoming an effective teacher. Dr. Harry Wong mentioned that "The very first day of school is the most important day of the school year" and yes I agree with what he stated. In the first day of school of course as a teacher, you will encounter diverse students that maybe you do not know yet, and you don't have any idea how they will perform in your class, it is important in a class that a teacher will give an emphasis about classroom management. When you manage your class well, you will expect that your class will be organized and your students will also be responsible. We can implement rules and regulation to avoid chaos inside the classroom.
We do not simply set rules and regulations on the first day of school. As a teacher we should also become their role model, we should demonstrate good attitudes. The attitude that you will show to them on the first day of school, that will be their impression of you until the last day. Remember that teachers are not just a teacher, but they are "influencer" too, We influence our students to do good things. It is our responsibility to make them good students.

The Effective Teacher

The Effective Teacher by Harry K. Wong

In the first part of the seminar entitled “The Effective Teacher” discussed by Mr. Harry Wong simply talks about how to become an effective teacher to our students. He clearly gives us strategies and techniques that we may use when we are already in the field of teaching. It is important that we learn how to catch the attention of our students so that they can easily acquire the lesson that we want them to learn. The most interesting part of the seminar is the four stages that Mr. Wong explained and these are the fantasy, survival, mastery, and impact. First the fantasy, this is the stage wherein the newly teacher ask himself what to teach, how to teach, what instructional materials are appropriate for them or should my students learn something from me? The teacher focusing more on the expectation than what is happening in the real world. Second the survival, in this stage the teacher has already planned what to do in the whole week, he just only need to give the task to the students and that’s it until the whole week end, the teacher only think if how he will survive but he didn’t think about his students learning from him. The third stage is the mastery, the teachers already understand their role in the life of their students, and they’re much responsible to do things for them. Lastly is the impact, this is the stage wherein the teacher will be proud to himself especially when they see his students becoming successful in their lives because he knows that he did his part as an effective teacher.
The relevance of this seminar to my personal growth, professional growth, and present course is that as a future special education teacher, I should be more productive in teaching my students especially they are not just the typical students we know but rather they are students with exceptionalities. Those students need extra love and care. I need to be more reflective to myself in terms of teaching them so that I can easily notice if I should think another strategies and techniques in that way I can be able to see if they really learn something from me. This seminar gives me an idea of how to be an effective teacher. It encourages me to do the right thing. Being a teacher is one of the hardest careers because you will deal with different students with different behavior but on the other hand, it is rewarding because you give a huge impact on their lives, we will forever remember because we contribute to their success.
The knowledge that I acquired in this seminar is very useful. Not only the students have differences but the teachers as well. We have our own style in managing the class and in dealing with students. Maybe the way I teach is the best for me but for you, it’s not. I can use the learnings when I am already in the field of teaching. I should be more responsible in everything. Mr. Wong stated three qualities that the teacher should have; good classroom manager, design lesson to reach mastery and has positive expectations that students will be successful. To be an effective teacher we should possess these qualities.
I will share the knowledge/skills that I have learned by simply informing those pre-service teachers that I know they don’t do the right thing isn’t in the seminar the speaker mentioned two terms efficient and effective. Efficient is doing things right while the effective is doing the right thing. I will inform my classmates that we should start doing the right thing while we are still in the last year of our training as a teacher, if we want to help to achieve our student’s success, we must know our responsibility and role of an effective teacher.
“ We are all good teachers but not all are successful” I agreed to what Mr. Harry Wong said. Yes we are all good but the question is, are we successful? As a teacher, we must often ask ourselves if we’re able to achieve our goals for our students. We stand not only as a teacher but also as a second parent, we only want the best for them, let’s give what they really deserve at the end of the day they will be thankful for us because we became part of their success in life.
The only problem that I have encountered during the seminar is that I can't clearly hear some of the words because of speaking too fast. But the good thing is that I am able to understand the message of that seminar. I didn't get bored that time because I like the way he talks, it's like I am watching comedy movie because the speaker is very enthusiastic and also knowledgeable about the topic.
